Sanjana: I knew only recently that you are into acting. How about acting in a play with us on the college day?

Kundana: Nothing is more to my liking. What's the play and when are the rehearsals? |
(అంతకంటే ఇష్టమైంది మరోటి లేదు నాకు. ఆ నాటకం ఏంటి? రిహార్సల్స్ ఎప్పుడు?)
Sanjana: But I'm afraid it might not go down well with your parents. They are rather traditional, aren't they?
(కానీ మీ తల్లిదండ్రులకు అదంత ఇష్టం ఉండకపోవచ్చేమో అని అనుకుంటున్నా. వాళ్లు కాస్త సంప్రదాయానికి ప్రాముఖ్యం ఇచ్చే వాళ్లు కదా?) |  |

Kundana: But I am keen on an acting career. I think I can convince them. (నాకు నటనా వ్యాపకం అంటే మక్కువెక్కువ. వాళ్లకు నచ్చజెప్పగలనని అనుకుంటున్నాను.)
Sanjana: The play we are going to stage appeals to the youth, we are sure. The di - alogues, I am sure, they will adore too.
(మనం వేయబోయే నాటకం యువతను ఆకర్షిస్తుందని నా నమ్మకం. అందులోని సంభాషణలను కూడా వాళ్లు చాలా ఇష్టపడతారని అనుకుంటున్నాను.)
Kundana: And what role is mine ? (అందులో నా పాత్రేంటి?)
Sanjana: That's going to be something you can't resist. I am certain of that. I thought of doing it myself, but I'm sure it suits you better than me. So I am not averse to passing it as to you..
(నువ్వు కాదనలేని పాత్ర అది. ఆ నమ్మకం నాకుంది. నేనే ఆ పాత్ర వేయాలనుకున్నా. కానీ దానికి నాకంటే నువ్వే బాగా సరిపోతావని నా నమ్మకం. అందుకని ఆ పాత్రను నీకివ్వడానికి నాకేం అభ్యంతరం లేదు.)
Kundana: What exactly is the role? I'm afraid you are talking much and saying little. (ఆ పాత్ర ఏంటసలు? నువ్వు ఎంతో మాట్లాడుతున్నప్పటికీ ఏమీ చెప్పడం లేదనిపిస్తోంది నాకు.)
Sanjana: Well, this is it. You act the role of a young woman who is very fond of her younger brother. She is very attached to him. Enter a young man who steels her heart. (అయితే విను. తమ్ముడంటే ఎంతో ఇష్టపడే యువతి పాత్ర నువ్వేయాల్సింది. తమ్ముడంటే ఆ యువతికి ఎంతో ఇష్టం. ఆ పరిస్థితుల్లో ఆమె హృదయంలోకి ప్రవేశిస్తాడొక యువకుడు.)
Kundana: So what happens next? Where is the challenge in the role? (అయితే తర్వాత ఏమవుతుంది? ఇందులో అంత సవాలుగా అనిపించే అంశం ఏంటి?)
Sanjana: Why don't you listen? you endear yourself to this young man so much that he is prepared to die for you. And here comes the rub the young man and your younger brother knew each other earlier. They had a quarrel over something and are averse to each other. (చెబుతుంటే వినవేం? నువ్వు ఈ యువకుడి ప్రేమకు పాత్రురాలవుతావు. ఎంతగా అంటే, నీ కోసం అతడు ప్రాణాలైనా ఇస్తాడు. ఇక్కడొస్తుంది అసలు చిక్కు. మీ తమ్ముడికీ, నీ హీరోకు అంతకుముందే పరిచయం. వాళ్లిద్దరికీ ఏదో విషయంలో పోట్లాట వచ్చింది. అందుకని వాళ్లకు ఒకరంటే ఒకరికి ఇష్టం ఉండదు.)
Kundana: So there lies the conflict, doesn't it (అక్కడుందన్నమాట, సంఘర్షణ)
Sanjana: Yea. You are torn between your passion for this young man, and your fond- ness for the brother. The hero also comes to know you have a soft spot for this brother of yours.
(అవును. యువకుడి పట్ల ప్రేమ, తమ్ముడి మీద ప్రీతి మధ్య ఏటూ తేల్చుకోలేకపోతావు. నీ తమ్ముడి మీద నీకున్న ప్రేమ హీరోకి కూడా తెలిసొస్తుంది.)
Kundana: What does he do then? (తర్వాత ఏం చేసాతడను?)
Sanjana: What pleases you pleases him too. He is ready to forgo his love so you can be happy with your brother. Your brother too, feels he shouldn't stand in the way of your happiness. (నీకేది ఇష్టమో, అతడికీ అదే ఇష్టం. మీ తమ్ముడితో సంతోషంగా ఉండేందుకు నిన్ను వదులుకు నేందుకు సిద్ధపడతాడు. మీ తమ్ముడు కూడా నీ సంతోషానికి అడ్డు రాకూడదనుకుంటాడు)
Kundana: Then? (అప్పుడు?)
Sanjana: They are reconciled and hit it off together. (వాళ్లిద్దరూ రాజీపడి, సఖ్యంగా ఉంటారు) Notes:1. Play = నాటకం (ఎక్కువగా ఆట, ఆడటం అనే అర్థంలో వాడతాం.)
2. Tradition = సంప్రదాయం;
Traditional = సంప్రదాయమైన/ సంప్రదాయాన్ని పాటించే,
3. Conflict = సంఘర్షణ (నాటకాల్లో/ సినిమాల్లో నటీనటులు అటో ఇటో తేల్చుకోలేని స్థితి.)
Conflict = రెండువర్గాల మధ్య సంఘర్షణ
Communal conflicts = మత సంఘర్షణలు
4. To be in the way of/ to stand in the way of = అడ్డంగా ఉండటం/ అడ్డు తగలడం.
Castism is in the way/ stands in the way of unity among Indians. (భారతీయుల ఐక్యతకు కులతత్వం అడ్డొస్తోంది.)
5. forgo = వదులుకోవడం Now look at the following sentences from the conversation between Sanjana and Kundana. 1) You are into acting 2) Nothing is more to my liking 3) ... it might not go down well with your parents. 4) I am keen on acting career. 5) The play we are going to stage appeals to the youth.

ఇష్టపడటం, అభిమానించడం, ఆకర్షించడం - ఇలాంటివి ఒకరికి ఒకరి పట్ల ఉన్న ఇషాయిష్టాలకు సంబంధించిన మాటలు. ఇవన్నీ పై సంభాషణలోని మాటలే. ఇప్పుడు Englishలో ఇష్టం, ప్రేమకు ఎన్ని పర్యాయ పదాలున్నాయో చూద్దాం. అయితే వాటిలో స్వల్పమైన తేడాలు కూడా ఉన్నాయి. |
1) To be into something = to be interested and like something
= దేన్నైనా ఇష్టపడటం, దానిపట్ల ఆసక్తితో ఉండటం

To somebody's liking = ఒకరికి ఇష్టంగా ఉండటం
a) These stunt movies are to your liking (ఈ స్టంట్ సినిమాలు నీకు సరిపోతాయి/ నువ్వు ఇష్టపడేవే.)
b) The way he talks is not to my liking. (అతడు మాట్లాడే తీరు నాకు నచ్చదు.)
3) It might not go down well with your parents.
Go down well with somebody: ఒకరికి ఆమోదయోగ్యంగా ఉండటం/ ఒకరికి నచ్చడం.
ఎక్కువగా not తో నచ్చకపోవడం అనే అర్థంతో వాడతాం.
a) My doing medicine did not go down well with my parents.
(నేను medicine చదవడం మా అమ్మా, నాన్నలకు ఇష్టం లేదు.) b) His taking livertis with them did not go down well with them. (తమతో అతడంత స్వతంత్రంగా ఉండటం వాళ్లకు నచ్చలేదు.)
4) be keen on = ఆసక్తి కలిగి ఉండటం/ శ్రద్ధ చూపించడం/ ఆత్రుతతో ఉండటం/ ఆకాంక్షతో ఉండటం |
a) Tendulkar is keen on playing till he can't play any more
(సచిన్ ఆడలేనంత వరకూ ఆడుతూనే ఉండాలని ఆతృత (తీవ్రమైన కోరిక.) తో ఉన్నాడు.
b) My brother is keen on going to the States.
(మా అన్నయ్య అమెరికాకు వెళ్లాలనే గట్టి కోరికతో ఉన్నాడు.) |  |
5) Appeal = ఆసక్తి కలిగించడం/ ఆకర్షించగలగడం
a) A movie without dances is not appealing of the youth today.
(డ్యాన్సులు లేని సినిమాలు ఈ కాలం యువతను ఆకర్షించలేవు.)
b) The design of the building is of no appeal to the people of all ages.
(ఆ కట్టడం రూపం అన్ని వయసుల వారినీ ఆకర్షించలేదు.) |
6) Resist = ఆకర్షణకు లోనవకుండా ఉండటం/ కోరికల్లాంటివి అదుపులో ఉంచుకోవడటం.
a) A drunkard cannot resist the temptation of the bottle.
(తాగుబోతు మద్యం సీసా ఆకర్షణకులొంగకుండా ఉండలేడు.)
b) With great difficulty I resisted my urge to hit him.
(అతి కష్టం మీద అతడిని కొట్టాలనే బలమైన కోరికను నియత్రించుకున్నాను.) |  |
Resist అంటే అడ్డుకోవడం/ నిరోధించడం కూడా
The agitators resisted the police attempt to arrest the leaders.

7) be averse to = ఇష్టం లేకపోవడం.
a) I am averse to late nights. (నాకు రాత్రి ఎక్కువ సేపు మేల్కోవడం ఇష్టం ఉండదు.)
b) How can he pass? He is averse to hard work.
ఎలా పాసవగలడతను? శ్రమంటే అతడికి ఇష్టం లేదు. (Pronunciation = అవ(ర్)జ్) |

a) She is fond of mangoes = ఆమెకు మామిడి పళ్లంటే ఇష్టం.

9) To endear one self to somebody = ఒకరికి మన మీద ఇష్టం కలిగించడం.

b) In spite of their different tastes, they hit if off together.
